Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Teeth grinding is technically known as ‘bruxism’. It can particularly happen in sleep. The jaws clench, and teeth surfaces may be ground down, resulting perhaps in severe dental damage. Dentists will provide protective night-guards for the ‘bruxer’.

As can be imagined, psychological factors often play a part. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate the behaviour. Hypnotherapy procedures may look for the cause, and then deal with the habit that has developed. An underlying verbal aggressiveness might perhaps be manifested through this condition.

Hypnotherapy may be effective in revealing the initiating events, exploring them, and resolving them. The ever-vigilant unconscious mind may then be instructed that as soon as any teeth-grinding should about to happen, instead, the jaw muscles will automatically relax.

Self-hypnosis may be taught, in order to reinforce the suggestions.
