(in classical style)
(Russian virtuoso Dmitry Tatarkin edited the guitar part. The work is dedicated to Hearne’s friend Selma Maria Nelson (photo), who died in a sea accident).
This is a highly tuneful and straightforward concerto, written in a classical style by Hearne. The first movement depicts brief scenes and moods associated with Spain. There is a sense of dance, including a stately early ‘sarabande’. The second movement is romantic and evocative. Raindrops are heard – one can imagine a lovely and fragrant Spanish place in rainstorm. In the third movement there is a feeling of vivaciousness and activity – suggesting horse-riding and enjoyment.
